Dinner from The Dock Restaurant, Nelson BC

NelsonRestaurants.com

This past week we did a take out from the Dock restaurant at 569 Ward st, Nelson BC.  We've had take out fish and chips from the Dock before, but it's been quite a while since we've done a fish dinner, so it was time again.

I called in from work and ordered a family dinner with garden salad.  It's great when restaurants already have a family size ordering option, especially when everyone is happy to have the same thing.  For two adults and two kids, you get six large pieces of fish with chips/fries.  Along with the salad, it came to about $43.

The meal was ready to pick up in 20 minutes and was still hot when I got it home.  The tartar sauce they provide is also excellent.  The service was friendly, and I also noticed they had an eat-in special that day for all-you-can-eat fish and chips for $13.50.  A great option if you are really hungry.

After we finished eating, there was enough food leftover for one person's lunch the next day.  Unfortunately, I didn't get it!

Dinner at the Hume

NelsonRestaurants.com

Thursday night this past week was dinner out with the family.  We chose the Hume Hotel restaurant because we hadn't been there in a while and it is always a good bet.  It was surprisingly not very full for a Thursday evening when Friday was a Remembrance Day holiday, but I guess a lot of people must go out of town on long weekends.

My wife and I shared the beef dip.  It tasted great, the bread was soft and the meat wasn't chewy like you sometimes get at other places.  The only thing I should have asked for was some horseradish, that would have topped it off nicely.  Beef dip is not something I'd usually order for myself, but it was one of those times when I'm glad I tried something out of the usual for myself.

The kids had the spaghetti, which is always a Hume Hotel favourite.  As usual, there was some left to bring home for the next day's lunch.

For dessert, we shared a piece of the black forest cake and three fruit pie a la mode.  The pie was well presented and looked as good as it tasted.  I even took a picture of it with my cellphone, I was so impressed.  One day I'll figure out how to add photos to the blog and share them.

All in all, another fun outing to the Hume Hotel restaurant!

Railway Station Specialty Meats & Deli, Nelson BC

NelsonRestaurants.com

This post isn't about a Nelson restaurant, but a specialty meats store you can find in Nelson BC.

Railway Station Specialty Meats & Deli is a family operated business that specializes in excellent quality and cuts of meats.  The beef they sell is in the top eight per cent quality of Angus Beef, the only place in the West Kootenay that carries it.

Along with regular deli store items, their specialty is sausages.  They carry fresh and smoked sausages with over two dozen varieties.  On my last visit to the store, I bought chicken apple, maple, and garlic flavoured sausages.  I did them up on the bbq and they were great.  If you're planning an evening bbq, stop in at Railway Meats and pick up some fresh cuts or sausages a few hours before.

Another item they make and sell in the store is meat pies.  I haven't tried one, but that will likely be my next purchase.

Railway Station Specialty Meats is located at Suite 10-85 Baker St, across from the old railway station and behind the A&W.  Their phone number is (250) 505-1116.

Paddy Shack in Nakusp BC

NelsonRestaurants.com

Ok, so I'm about 150km from Nelson, but sometimes I do work up in the Nakusp area.  For more on Nakusp, you can check out http://www.nakusp.org/

Last week I stopped into the Paddy Shack, which is about 1km south of Nakusp, heading towards New Denver.  The Paddy Shack is an outdoor food concession that is only open part of the year (the warmer part).  The staff is fun and they have more than just burgers and hot dogs.

I was going to order a strawberry Sundae, but when I got to the window they asked if I wanted a donair for $4.00.  Normally they are about $8.50, though I'd never had one before.  Seems like they had a cancelled order or double order, so they needed to get rid of it.  I thought it was a great deal, so I took it instead of the Sundae.  Just as I was leaving, the lady called me back and gave me a handful of napkins.  You'll need these, she said.

Driving back to Nelson, I started in on the donair and it was a real treat, the best I've ever had.  When I got to the bottom, the excess sauce spilled out and sure enough those napkins came in handy.  Yesterday I was coming back from Nakusp again, and stopped in to buy another donair at full price.  Well worth it.  If you're going by and want to stop in, they have both chicken donairs and lamb&beef donairs.  Other items on the menu are speciality burgers, hot dogs, fries, poutine (which I've heard is great), and ice cream.

Dinner at Leo's in Nelson BC

NelsonRestaurants.com

This past weekend it was off for a family dinner at Leo's Pizza & Greek Taverna in Nelson BC.  (409 Kootenay st, half a block off Baker st).

We had actually tried to book the Friday evening dinner at the Hume Hotel Restaurant, but they were full.  We haven't been to the Hume in a while so we'll have to try again soon.

At Leo's we were seated quickly and had a nice waitress.  The kids ordered Lemon sodas, with one order of fettucini alfredo, and one order of baked spaghetti and meatballs.  For the parents, it was a Greek platter for two that included baked potatoes, warm pita bread, hummus, calamari, and Greek salad.  The Greek platter always feels like a healthy meal and this time was no exception.  The kids enjoyed their meals, and there were leftovers for the next day's lunches.  All in all it was another great meal at Leo's.

The only tip I would have for you is to book a table away from the entrance.  The tables closest to the door get a cool draft whenever someone exits or enters.  Ofcourse, when the weather gets warmer this won't matter so much, or you could sit at the outside patio.

Jackson's Hole Restaurant in Nelson BC

NelsonRestaurants.com

Jackson's Hole is always a fun, lively restaurant to go to in Nelson BC.  I sometimes go for a drink and appetizers after a hockey or soccer game, or for a family meal.

I just learned that they are running a 5 Year Anniversay Contest right now until March 4.  One winner plus a friend will win a day of Cat Skiing at Retallack Lodge near Kaslo.

To get the full details, call or visit the restaurant.  It looks like you can enter more than once.  They are at 524 Vernon st in Nelson.

Thor's Pizza

Two takeout large pizzas from Thor's this weekend, half cheese, half Hawaiian, half pepperoni, and half Greek veggie.  Always great!
